Our Tree

By Stephanie Bermudez-Cruz

You made me wait

You had me anticipate

I was the prey in your game

Caught in your dark terrain

Why did you give me something to smile about?

So that you could let me quickly shrivel in pain?

Just for your selfish gain?

You’ve come back to apologize

But how am I to recognize the truth from the lies?

Keep your crocodile tears away

Let that leaf fall and sway

The tree that bore that leaf and the ones before perished

Because you did not cherish it

You gave it coldness with your disregard

You gave it warmth with your superficial sympathy

You gave it a sultry heat with your rays of false hope

Now there’s nothing left to say

So goodbye

Good day
